Try Harder!

The college admissions frenzy at San Francisco's iconic Lowell High School.
Try Harder!
At Lowell High School, San Francisco's top-ranked public high school with a majority Asian American student body, seniors are keenly aware of intense competition for the few open spots at their dream colleges. Following five students through the emotionally draining application process - navigating racial stereotypes, family pressure, and the illusion of meritocracy - the film humanizes working-class Asian American students often stereotyped as robotic test-takers, and asks deeper questions about educational achievement, mental health, and equity in college admissions. Premiered at Sundance 2021; broadcast on PBS's Independent Lens.
