Wong Sinsaang
A lyrical portrait of the filmmaker's father, a proprietor of a dry cleaning business in Los Angeles' Silver Lake neighborhood.

The filmmaker's attempt to understand the life of his father, Wong Moon Tung (Frank Wong), a Chinese immigrant who runs a laundry and dry-cleaning business in the Silver Lake/Hollywood area of Los Angeles, is contrasted with the grinding routine of the dry cleaner's everyday life. Juxtaposes stark glimpses of the laundromat, where customers subject Mr. Wong to daily humiliation and dehumanization, against serene scenes of him practicing tai-chi, painting watercolors, and writing poetry and calligraphy. The director's own confusion over his father's seeming subservience gives way to a realization of his father's larger inner life and dreams. One of the first productions distributed under the Visual Communications banner; made by Wong as a UCLA film student, part of the L.A. Rebellion film movement.
